MCLU Scolnick Dinner Honors Nan Heald

On May 6, the Maine Civil Liberties Union (MCLU) celebrated their 42nd anniversary with their annual Justice Louis Scolnick Award Dinner. Each year at the dinner, the MCLU honors an outstanding member of Maine’s legal community. This year’s event celebrated Nan Heald for her work with disadvantaged Mainers including Native Americans and young people.

Founded in 1968, the MCLU works to advance and preserve the civil liberties of Maine residents. The organization is the state affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), whose mission is to assure that the Bill of Rights is preserved for people of all races, colors, and backgrounds. Today, nearly ninety years after being formed, the ACLU defends one’s right to express his or her opinion in nearly 6,000 cases annually.

Established in 1989, the Scolnik Award is named for the first president of the Maine Civil Liberties Union and former Maine Supreme Court Justice, Louis Scolnik. The award honors members of Maine’s legal community who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to the protection of civil liberties. This year’s Justice Louis Scolnick Award Dinner honoree has worked tirelessly on behalf of Mainers for over two decades.

And like Heald and the MCLU, the Law Offices of Joe Bornstein has been protecting the rights of Maine’s injured and disabled for over 35 years. With a statewide practice and a dedication to providing access to justice for Mainers of all socioeconomic backgrounds, the Law Offices of Joe Bornstein is proud to support the MCLU and congratulate Nan Heald. It is through hard work, dedication, and perseverance that equality resonates through our great state.
