Maine Drivers Reminded To Stay Focused, Alert While Driving

Distracted driving is a serious problem in Maine

Despite numerous warnings about the dangers of distracted driving, many drivers in Maine continue to cause serious car accidents because they fail to pay attention to the road. To address this problem, local and state officials are focusing on Distracted Driving Awareness Month, which occurs every April, to remind Maine drivers about the importance of staying focused when behind the wheel.

"Although using cell phones for talking and texting is the most commonly discussed form of driver distraction, it is not the only distraction that can endanger drivers," explained Michelle Anderson, Director of Operations at The National Road Safety Foundation, which is organizing the nationwide educational campaign.

At the Law Offices of Joe Bornstein, our Maine car accident attorneys are all too familiar with the devastation caused by distracted drivers. Therefore, we strongly support any effort to educate the public on this critical issue and prevent further tragedies on Maine's roads.

What percentage of distracted drivers cause accidents?

Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of car accidents in the United States, with 25 to 30 percent of fatal accidents nationwide resulting from distracted driving, according to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The impact of distracted driving on our roads is staggering. Every year, more than 325,000 injuries and between 11,500 to 13,800 deaths occur due to distracted drivers, according to NHTSA car accident data.

While texting or using a cell phone while driving are the most well-known forms of distracted driving, there are many other ways in which drivers can become distracted. For example, eating while driving, operating a GPS, personal grooming, and talking with a passenger in the car are all common forms of distracted driving that can have dangerous consequences.

Maine distracted driving statistics

Distracted driving is a major concern in Maine. An estimated 3,400 car accidents, 500 injuries, and 45 deaths occur due to distracted drivers, according to accident data compiled by the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety and reported by News Center Maine.

Maine State Police Sergeant Daniel Hanson spoke to News Center Maine last April about the seriousness of the issue, saying, "Distracted driving is a huge problem here in Maine and across the country. Here in Maine, we expect approximately 45 people will die as a result of distracted driving crashes this year."

Is it illegal to talk on the phone while driving in Maine?

Maine has taken a strong stance against distracted driving, with strict laws in place to discourage this dangerous behavior. According to Maine Motor Vehicle Statute, Title 29-A, Section 2121, all drivers in Maine are prohibited from using a handheld electronic device, including a cell phone, while driving. The first offense carries a $50 fine, while subsequent violations receive a $250 fine.

The same penalties apply to texting while driving in Maine. Additionally, all drivers under 18 are strictly prohibited from using any type of cell phone while driving, as outlined in Maine Motor Vehicle Statute, Title 29-A, Section 2116.
